Pick green-core MR board for kitchens and bathrooms, red-core FR board where building control asks for Euroclass B, and veneered, melamine or through-coloured sheets when the face itself is the finish.

Buying guide
How to choose MDF.
Standard MDF machines cleanly and paints well, for furniture, shelving and interior joinery that stays dry. Use moisture resistant MDF, usually green cored, in kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere humidity rises, but never outdoors.
Fire retardant MDF reaches Euroclass B-s1, d0 for wall linings in escape routes and public buildings. Veneered and melamine faced boards arrive finished, and the wall panels come primed with grooves, beads or flutes already machined.
Wear a dust mask and use extraction when cutting. MDF dust is fine and travels.
