Fire board.

Both boards are A1 non-combustible and go where timber-based sheets are not allowed, such as escape routes, service risers and high-rise wall build-ups. Magnesium oxide board is the cheaper all-rounder for linings and sheathing, while calcium silicate is lighter and is the usual specified board for tested fire protection systems.

Buying guide

How to choose fire board.

Fire boards add resistance where plasterboard alone is not enough, or where damp would ruin gypsum. Magnesium oxide boards are A1 non-combustible, take tiles and render, and cut with a scoring knife or saw. Calcium silicate boards are the specification choice for protecting steel, ducts and service risers.

Fire performance belongs to the whole system, so follow the maker’s tested build-up for fixings, joints and sealants.
